—- « Hero of the week » —-
Every week, Belty will highlight a man who is making great things and deserves a better attention.
—- Steve Gleason —-
Today, we will talk about Steve Gleason, former (American) football player who has played for The New Orleans Saints from 2000-2008. In January, 2011 Steve was diagnosed with ALS. Since then, Steve decided to found the Gleason Initiative Foundation Mission to provide people with neuromuscular diseases or injuries with leading edge technology, equipment and services.
—- What is this disease? —-
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their demise. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, people may lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe.
—- What is “The Gleason Initiative Foundation Mission”? —-
The Gleason Initiative Foundation is a non-profit corporation with the mission to help people diagnosed with ALS to fight it with the latest computer-operated technology to allow them the highest level of independence possible.
There main concern is to raise the public awareness toward ALS by providing and documenting extraordinary life adventures for individuals with muscular diseases or injuries. They also created a global conversation about ALS to ultimately find solutions and an end to the disease.
